Ovarian Cystectomy

Recovering from ovarian cyst removal

Ovarian cystectomy removes a cyst while preserving the ovary itself. Most are done laparoscopically through two or three small incisions, and most people go home the same day or the next.

Recovery is usually straightforward, but two things surprise people: how much the bloating affects comfort, and the shoulder pain — referred pain from carbon dioxide used to inflate the abdomen during surgery, which has nothing to do with your shoulder and everything to do with your diaphragm.

What to expect

Days 1–3. Port site soreness, bloating, cramping, and shoulder or collarbone pain. Fatigue from anesthesia.

Week 1. Noticeable improvement. Most people are off prescription pain medication within a few days.

Weeks 2–3. Back to most normal activity. Bloating resolves gradually.

Weeks 4–6. Clearance for heavy lifting, exercise, and intercourse.

What helps

Walking, which genuinely is the fastest route out of gas pain — short and frequent beats long and occasional. Peppermint tea and warmth are commonly recommended for bloating. Loose waistbands. Stool softeners for the first week, since anesthesia and pain medication both slow things down.

When to call your doctor

Fever over 100.4°F, severe or one-sided worsening pain, persistent vomiting, incision redness or drainage, heavy vaginal bleeding, or calf pain and swelling.
